About Masjid Noor El Islam (Cardiff) and a careful, high-level timeline.

About

Masjid Noor El Islam (Cardiff) serves the Muslim community of Butetown (Tiger Bay) and wider Cardiff. We aim to uphold worship and learning upon the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah, with teaching that is clear, evidence-based, and beneficial for families.

A careful historical timeline (high level)

Butetown is widely described as one of the longest-established Muslim communities in the UK, shaped by seafarers and families connected to Cardiff’s docks.

  • 11 November 1938: Building approval was granted for what is widely described as the first purpose-built mosque in Wales.
  • 2 January 1941: The site was badly affected during wartime bombing (the Cardiff Blitz).
  • July 1943: A temporary structure was opened for worship and community use.
  • 1947: A more permanent mosque building was established on the site.
  • Late 1980s: The centre underwent later redevelopment and rebuilding work.
  • 1997: The earlier Peel Street building was finally demolished and replaced by the current two-storey building accessed via Maria Street.
  • 2012: The most recent major renovation took place (community record).
